Ladakh/Kashmir/Pakistan 1983 - Reel 3/3
Some years ago I bought three reels labeled "Ladakh/Kashmir/Pakistan"on eBay. They were filmed by a Super 8 amateur back in 1983 and the film stock used is most probably Kodachrome K40. They might have never been played before because some parts of the film still sticked together like coming fresh from the processing lab. Though the hasty and tottery panning of this obviously elder guy (one could also tell from the spidery handwriting on the boxes) and his problems finding the right focus (guess he lost his glasses) are truly annoying, the colours are still vivid and the movie is kind of a fascinating time capsule. One can see markets, monks, monasteries, cattle in the streets, policemen with turbans and many people in traditional clothings side by side with western-oriented youngsters wearing the odd suits of the 70s. Other reels feature a procession of pupils and their school, child labourers at work, a traditional dance performance, obviously intended for tourists. The scenes from Pakistan show mainly mosques and people in the strees. By the way, I'd be happy if people familiar with these places could comment which locations they recognize.Submitted January 08. 2009 by anvalin
